São Mamede is a historic Art Gallery, founded in the 60s, and one of Portugal’s first. Over the course of its history, it has exhibited and promoted works from the country’s most notable artists (such as Vieira da Silva, Paula Rego and Almada, or Nadir Afonso), as well as many contemporary and young talents.
With its ancient brick archways and stone floors, the Gallery is considered a local landmark. It is located in the heart of the city, in Príncipe Real, and features a wide variety of rooms with ample displays and several ongoing exhibitions.
As of 2018, the Gallery has annexed an exhibit space within a short 30-meter walk. The new venue is comprised of two different levels, with concrete floors and expansive white walls, in a total area of 500 square meters. In this additional space, further modern and contemporary works are showcased.
